Press Release
Celebration of Vesak Day (Buddha Jayanti)
The Embassy of Nepal, Bangkok and Thai Nepali Association jointly celebrated Vesak Day in the Embassy premises on 29 May 2018. A prayer meeting was held in the morning at the Embassy during which devotees of Buddha prayed for peace and wellbeing of everybody. This was followed by an alms-giving programme to the Monks. Eleven Monks (some from Myanmar and some Nepali monks living in Thailand) were present during the programme. The Monks and the followers chanted Buddha Mantras during the programme and the Monks delivered Dharmadeshana about the philosophy of Buddhism.
While welcoming the participants, H.E. Dr. Khaga Nath Adhikari, Ambassador of Nepal, spoke about the importance of applying Buddhist philosophy in practical life. He also highlighted the importance of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha in today’s world, and called upon all participants to give further publicity to Buddha and his birthplace, Lumbini, so that more and more people could visit Lumbini and benefit from Buddha’s teachings.
More than 100 participants, including representatives from Thai Nepali Association, Non Resident Nepali Association, Thailand and other followers of Lord Buddha were present during the programme.
The International Vesak Day, as decided by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, is also observed in Thailand as Visakha Bucha (Baishakh Pooja).
